A long power outage in below freezing weather last Thanksgiving brought front and center the need for a warming station on Bainbridge Island. This prompted B.I. Senior Community Center (BISCC) to investigate how they could get a warming station on the Island.
A warming station is a facility that can operate during power outages to provide shelter, heat, lights and refreshments to citizens who find themselves unable to find shelter.
After many hours of work and coordination, the Warming Station has become a reality. It is a joint project of BISCC, Kitsap County Emergency Management (KCDEM), the American Red Cross, the City of Bainbridge Island and the Department of Homeland Security. It is the County’s first official warming station.
Everyone is invited to attend. There will be a short presentation on the history of the Station and how it will operate. All the organizations that helped make the Warming Station possible will participate in the Ribbon Cutting. Light refreshments will be served.
Donations are being accepted to provide a tank full of propane for the Generator. Either mail a donation to BISCC, 370 Brien Dr., SE, Bainbridge Island, WA 98110 or drop it off at the Center.
